Voxalba was founded in 1989 as part of the activities offered by “La Guineu” music school in Barcelona.
Voxalba has been conducted by renowned directors such as Lluis Vilamajó, its founder, and Xavier Sans and Xavier Puig. In 2000, Elisenda Carrasco took on the role of choir director.
In 2001, the choir worked with the prestigious director Maria Guinard, from Venezuela, a specialist in contemporary South American repertoire, and also the composer Alberto Grau.
In 2002, the choir participated in the production of the opera “Savitry” by Hoist, performed at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville.
In June of 2003, Voxalba presented a programme based on songs from the Renaissance with viola de gamba, lute and small guitar accompaniment.
In the summer of 2005, the choir toured Venezuela, giving several concerts, thanks to the collaboration of Maria Guinand and Alberto Grau and the hospitality of the Cantoría Alberto Grau of Caracas, Ludus Vocaliter of Los Teques and Voces Blancas of Mérida.
In 2006, Voxalba worked through the Augusta Mass and other pieces with the Basque director and
composer Javi Busto and in October, gave a highly successful concert under his direction in Barcelona. That year, the choir were invited to premiere eight pieces by contemporary composers from Tarragona. The concert included audiovisual screenings by Carles Hac Mor, Ester Xargay and Adolf Alcañiz.
In 2007, Voxalba prepared a Latin Jazz repertoire with the jazz musician Eduardo Tancredo and presented it in a concert at the Harlem Jazz Club in Barcelona. At the end of the year, the choir won 2nd prize at the “Certamen Nacional de Nanas y Villancicos” in Rojales (Múrcia) and at the beginning of 2008, 2nd prize at the Cant Coral competition in Malgrat de Mar.
At 2008 Voxalba were invited to sing at the celebratory concert of the 15th anniversary of ACEM (Asociación Catalana de escuelas de música) which was held at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona. They performed pieces by Alberto Guinovart, directed by Salvador Brotons, and were the guide choir for more than 3000 children.
They also participated in the music and dance production “En clave de Jazz, Tribute to Gershwin” created by the choreographer David Campos and performed at the Santa Coloma de Gramanet Auditorium.
The year also saw two choral exchanges: with Ludus Vocaliter of Venezuela and the Coro de Voces Graves of Madrid, with concerts held in both Madrid and Barcelona.
This year, the Acción Ciudadana de la Generalitat contracted Voxalba to perform three Christmas concerts in different towns in Catalonia.
In 2009, the choir travelled to Hungary to work with the prestigious choir directors Zs.Mindsensky and D.Szabó. They give concerts in Budapest and Nyregyháza, together with the choirs Musica Nostra and the multi-awarded Cantemus.
They also participate in the Cantonigrós Internacional Dance and Music Competition and receive 2nd prize in the Female Choir category.
In October, Voxalba recorded their first CD.
In December, the choir celebrated their 20th anniversary with a highly moving concert where all ex-directors and ex-singers were invited to join.
To finish off the year with a bang, the choir were invited to sing the Catalonia National Anthem “Els Segadors” before a football match Catalonia-Argentina at the famous Camp Nou.
In April of 2010, the choir will be travelling to Istanbul to participate in the 2nd Bosphorus University Choral festival, organised as part of the İstanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture.
